The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Key Part in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series set to start on November 21 in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.

"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, not only his injury, but further aspects," he commented.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
