A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key public works projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” declared the national leader.
The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its duties in civilian projects. They were executed at an accelerated pace, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised persistent apprehensions over safety standards.

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in total compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital projects.
